Course 02

The Wheel and the Land

Hopi Tradition, Shamanism & the Medicine Wheel

Inner / outer: Both, explicitly — this is the course where you're first asked to hold the two threads together.
Duration: Loading…
Format: Reading, exercise & a personal 1-to-1 tutorial

Overview

The first course where inner and outer appear openly in the same symbol. Two distinct traditions are studied side by side rather than merged into one: the Hopi emergence and prophecy tradition, and the medicine wheel as taught across the Plains nations — kept separate deliberately, since they come from different peoples and shouldn't be flattened into a single system.

What this course covers

The Hopi account of emergence through the worlds and the prophecies tied to it; the medicine wheel as a map of the four directions, the seasons of a life, and one's place among other beings; and shamanic practice as a method — journeying, and the role of the practitioner as an intermediary between the seen and unseen.

Suggested reading

  • Book of the Hopi — Frank Waters (compiled with Hopi elders; its standing within the Hopi community has been debated, which is itself a useful discussion point)
  • The Medicine Wheel: Earth Astrology — Sun Bear & Wabun Wind
  • A short, reputable introduction to core shamanic practice and cross-cultural shamanism (reading to be confirmed)

Topics of investigation

  • How does the medicine wheel function as both an outer map (seasons, directions, community) and an inner one (the self's own cycle)?
  • What does the Hopi emergence narrative suggest about the relationship between a people and the land they live on?
  • What is the shaman's role, and how does it differ from a priest's or a mystic's?
Practical Activity & Exercise

Working with the medicine wheel as a personal reflective tool — placing your own current life circumstances against its four directions — followed by a written account of what the exercise revealed.
