Course 03

Crossing the Threshold

The Egyptian and Tibetan Books of the Dead

Inner / outer: Primarily inner, with an outer/anthropological angle in the comparison itself — how two separate societies built the same intuition into ritual and text.
Duration: Loading…
Format: Reading, exercise & a personal 1-to-1 tutorial

Overview

This is where the material gets genuinely harder, and it leans on the meditative grounding from Course 01 — the Tibetan text in particular assumes some familiarity with Buddhist thought. Two ancient, geographically unconnected civilisations independently produced detailed instructions for the passage of consciousness through death. Read side by side, the correspondences are striking.

What this course covers

The structure and purpose of the Papyrus of Ani (the Egyptian Book of the Dead) as a guide for the soul's judgement and passage; the Bardo Thödol (the Tibetan Book of the Dead) as a guide through the intermediate states between death and rebirth; and a direct comparison of how each culture pictured the soul's trials.

Suggested reading

  • The Egyptian Book of the Dead: The Papyrus of Ani — E. A. Wallis Budge translation
  • The Tibetan Book of the Dead — Robert Thurman's translation (most accessible); the Evans-Wentz edition is worth at least sampling

Topics of investigation

  • What does each tradition assume happens to consciousness immediately after death?
  • Where do the two texts describe genuinely similar trials or stages, and where do they differ?
  • What do both traditions imply about how a person should live, given how they say a person dies?
Practical Activity & Exercise

A guided contemplative exercise on impermanence and the passage of consciousness, handled with care, followed by a written comparison of the two texts' treatment of one specific stage or trial.

Anyone comfortable with a genuinely harder course

This is a deliberate step up in difficulty from the first two courses.

Readers interested in cross-cultural comparison

The course's core method is holding two independent traditions side by side.
