Foundations in Buddhist & Taoist Contemplative Practice
Inner / outer: Primarily inner — this is direct cultivation of the inner world, the first tool you'll use throughout the rest of the curriculum.
Duration:Loading…
Format: Weekly teaching, reading & exercise, plus a personal 1-to-1 tutorial
Overview
The opening course, and deliberately the gentlest. Before you study any system, you need a working relationship with your own attention — this course establishes that through direct meditative practice, drawn from Buddhist and Taoist sources, rather than through doctrine. It runs five weeks, one core text and one week of guided practice at a time.
What this course covers
The discipline of meditation itself — breath, posture, attention; the core Buddhist teachings on suffering, non-attachment and insight; and the Taoist idea of wu wei, effortless action. Each week opens with short teaching and guidance from Benjamin before that week's reading and exercise, so you leave with both a daily practice and two contrasting frames for understanding it, not one tradition's doctrine alone.
Suggested reading — one book per week
Week 1 — The Dhammapada (any reputable translation)
Week 2 — The Buddha and His Religion — J. Barthélemy-Saint-Hilaire
Week 3 — Seeking the Heart of Wisdom — Joseph Goldstein & Jack Kornfield
Week 4 — The Tao Te Ching — Lao Tzu
Week 5 — Tao: The Watercourse Way — Alan Watts
Topics of investigation
What actually happens in the body and mind during sustained, simple attention to breath?
What does “non-attachment” actually mean in daily life, as distinct from indifference?
What changes in an ordinary action when it's met with full, present awareness rather than habit?
Where do Buddhist non-attachment and Taoist wu wei agree, and where do they genuinely diverge?
How does “flowing like water” relate to the stillness cultivated earlier in the course?
Practical Activity & Exercise
A daily sitting practice throughout the five weeks, paired with one short written paragraph each week — each a self-contained entry in a personal meditation handbook you keep, a record to return to whenever you sit again. The course closes with a longer written contemplation that draws your five paragraphs together, completing the handbook and preparing you for your 1-to-1 tutorial with Benjamin.
